Quite an interesting clan we are..... We have three biological sons, one adopted son, a seemingly never ending supply of foster sons and the wonders of all wonders... we are expecting our baby girl in March '08!! This blog is a place for us to get out our accomplishments, fears, anxieties, and joys through the whole process. Not to mention the trials and triumphs or the day to day.

The younger they are (developmentally) the more likely they are to call you "mom" right away. It does not mean that they are attached (or that they are not attached). If other kids in the house call you "mom" then they figure that is what you are called. There are children in birth families who call all women "mom" and all men "dad."
If you teach all the kids to call you "Aunt Gina" it will morph into someting like "Anagee" and THAT will be what every kid calls you.
I know of several different foster parents whos ay that. The little girls I care for are 10 and 7, and they've always been very eager to call any caretaker "Mom" or "Dad," especially if they really liked the people right away!
I also know that when I worked in day care centers, a lot of the toddlers (but for some reason, especially the ones who were particularly attached to me) called me "Mommy" or "Mama." I don't think it was some sort of insult to their actual mama's, or that they THOUGHT I was their mama... I think it was because they knew how to say the word "Mama" and it was a word easily associated with a woman taking care of them!
